McDonalds & Compostable Plastics at London Olympics

Compostable Plastics are being used this week at McDonalds‘ Olympic Park restaurant, which is being touted as the largest fast food spot in the world. McDonalds’ recycling efforts expect to curb the 3300 metric tons of food waste generated by the London Olympic Games.

McDonalds has teamed up with Italy’s Novamont and their Mater-Bi Bioplastic, which can be used with any waste disposal system. Mickey D’s is using the product to produce cups, cutlery, straws, lids, and containers. Novamont has been producing 60,000 tons of bio-plastics raw material for the world each year since 2008. Bioplastics are produced from substances obtained from plants; corn starch or vegetable oils for example. The goal o f Compostable  Bioplastics is to reduce the CO2 emissions from the incineration and dumping of our trash at landfills.

Novamont has been in Bioplastics business since 1992 and serves many countries around the world including the United States. Their products are used for fruit and vegetable packaging, accessories, toys, and a bio filler for the auto industry.

HR Associates has numerous clients which provide or use plastics in Ohio’s Auto Industry and various other industries. The sheer volume of plastic products produced here in the Miami Valley deserve the attention of these companies’ engineers to the bioplastic alternative. With the depletion of the fossil fules on our planet, this viable alternative may as well be made here in the States.
