Keeping New Hires Beyond 90 Days

New HiresA common and difficult dilemma manufacturers face currently is retaining new hires beyond a 90 day assessment period. With unemployment rates below 6%, competition for an “exceptional” employee among the eligible workforce is ramping up. It is crucial for hiring managers to set the tone for the success of new employees during the hiring process and after.

According to Google, their hiring managers are responsible for instituting a “role & responsibilities” discussion with new hires. Matching newbies with a peer or supervisor, a “Go-To” person for any questions that may come up. The manager should also help new hires build relationships with the company, a social network. Monthly onboarding check-ins will solidify the new hires relationship with the company. Most importantly, create open communication with employees which can foster new ideas within the company.

Portland State University professor, Dr. Tayla Bauer’s Onboarding study states that the building blocks of successful onboarding are often called the “Four C’s”.

  1. Connection refers to developing the key interpersonal relationships, support mechanisms, and information networks needed to prosper in a job.
  2. Culture refers to learning the unique organizational culture of a new employer.
  3. Clarification refers to understanding one’s job duties, work processes, & organizational structure & acronyms.
  4. Compliance refers to completing required employment paperwork and providing necessary equipment like I.D. badges & computers.

The most important of the 4 “Cs” is Connection. Meeting one’s supervisor decreased the odds of turnover by 51% and significantly decreases stress, Having healthy relationships within an organization to draw upon is vital when new employees encounter new challenges throughout their first year. A great place for a hiring manager to begin would be integrating recruitment & orientation with onboarding. Make a great 1st Day impression with mentoring and by encouraging on-going and continuous Networking. An open communication channel  seems to be the key to keeping better talent.
